We take for granted how much hope is a driver in our work.
As employees, we show up in the hope and promise our employer won’t be broke by the time our fortnightly wage and super is due.
In business, we are striving for a return over a longer timeframe.
When we build a business around genetics, that timeframe is lengthened again.
It is generally considered that a generation in sheep farming is about every 3 years. And it takes at least 3 generations of positive genetic selection to see that selection expressed in the flock.
When a farmer selects rams and replacement ewes, they are doing so on the hope that what they are breeding for will be desired by the consumer in 10years time. This isn’t a game that can change an assembly line in a few weeks to produce a completely new product.
If we are voting on or introducing policy to destroy this hope, take some time to consider what you are doing to the people who have put the work in.
